Feeling a bit blurry?
Sometimes, life wears us out.

We can't think, we can't dream, and we certainly can't figure out how to get back where we want to be. We are stuck in a cycle of overwhelm and overwork, with no idea how we got there. We are tired, stressed out, and unfocused. Like those old fashioned sepia-toned pictures, we are just a little blurry and faded around the edges. Even worse, it's hard to stop and assess where we are; all the overwhelm and stress leave us unable to figure out how to get out.

We hate the Sepia Life, but we have no idea how to leave. We reach out to friends and family, we try to make new friends. We start a new hobby, or we focus on our family. We master the Gentle Art of Overwhelm as all the while the sepia continues to spread.
Eventually, we can't figure out how we got to this gray place.

Even worse, we can't figure out how to get out.

My name is Sarah. If anyone is an expert in the Gentle Art of Overwhelm and being stuck in a Sepia-Toned Life, it's me! A few years ago, I was a successful academic administrator, loving my life, with a home I was proud of and a puppy who was an adorable, wiggly, happy boy, even if I was constantly apologizing to people at the dog park when he stole their poop bags to shred on the grass.

Then, in the course of a few months, my job went belly-up, my finances went to pot, and I lost the life I had worked so hard to create. Grieving was a daily ritual. The more I grieved the deeper I slipped into the Sepia Life, where everything was gray. I had no idea how to turn the lights back on. The Gentle Art of Overwhelm took over my life as I tried to pay the bills, take care of myself, and make sure the dog- now a half-grown furry terror- got enough exercise and attention he didn't shred every plastic bag in the house.

I hated every second of it. The grief became stronger, and then the depression set it. I gained 40 pounds. I stopped doing things that nurtured me. I cried several apologies into the dog's fur as I tried to make him understand mommy was too tired to play and could he please not bark because her head hurt from the stress.
​
And then one day I sort of woke up and looked around.
​
How did I get here? Is the grief always going to overwhelm? Does this mean I'm not doing enough? I'm already working 60 hours a week, why can't I pay bills or take time off or always have to miss the fun things my friends are doing? Where had I lost myself so badly that I'd lost the focus I needed to live my life in color?
​
But then a second thought hit me. None of those questions matter. The bigger/better/most useful question was WHAT was I going to do NOW? What steps can I take NOW to regain my life, my focus, and my sanity?
​
And that is how Life in Focus came to be. Slowly, I figured out where I needed to change to bring in the clarity, focus, and color I needed to set aside the Gentle Art of Overwhelm, pull out my colorful acrylics and say goodbye to the Sepia Life.
​

After a career in education and business adminstration, Sarah founded CLI to help people grow into the life they want to create. When she isn't coaching, she loves playing with her golden retrieve Clovis, CrossFitting, geeking out to Star Wars, watching Dallas Cowboys football, and knitting.
